Why rescue a senior???  To see that smile (pic 299)!!!!

Meet Jake.  Jake will be 10 years old in July.

My husband John and I agreed to foster Jake when we thought we had an adopter looking for an older weim.  We already had three of our own so adopting wasn't an option but fostering until we could get him into a good home was fine.

The day his family dropped him off at our home, I thought my heart would break for him.  When they left, he went from door to door to door looking for them to come back for him. I've never seen a sadder boy.  I promised him I would make it up to him.  That night, Jake spent his first night ever on a couch in front of a blazing fire.  The next morning after he had his breakfast and went out, he got to get back in bed with John for a few hours.

The first few days were spent showing Jake lots of love and working through the issues that come with getting the old dogs used to the new dog.  There were a few scuffles but nothing we couldn't handle.

During that first week we just fell in love with him. He was so appreciative of the affection and attention he was getting.  When I came home from work he would do a little dance at the top of the steps...and then there's that smile......

He does have some dominance issues and as a result John and I started to discuss the difficulty in finding a good home for Jake with someone who would be able to handle him and not be easily intimidated by him.  Jake is a big boy.  The first time he bared his teeth at me during a correction, it was all I could do not to take a step back.  But even a dominant dog wants boundaries and it didn't take Jake long to figure out that he wasn't in charge.

After the first week all the dogs started to warm up to each other and Jake fell nicely into the routine of the household.  Things went so well that we decided the best thing for Jake would be for us to keep him.

Every dog lover should adopt an older dog once in their life......it feels good to know that this good boy has a good home for the rest of his life.

Having lost my best friend and hunting paretner of more than 12 yrs...Misty. On the last sunday in april. I was in the market for a new best friend...Well let me back it up a little first. Misty came into my life with a bang lol! A friend had her brother Blue....and she was in a home(if thats what you want to call it) that was not good for her. Yes she was a wiem, She was my first contact with this breed. I've had bird dogs before but non like the wiems. So anyways...Me and my friend...ummmm...liberated her from said "home" and she came and lived with me. I have never had a dog get under my skin and into my heart like her ever before. At times I wanted to kill her in the most painful ways imaginable, but of course, couldnt.....and yet she brought the most joyful and crazy adventures into my life! She had a very good and spoiled life, That dang dog did. And when she left me...It hurt like nothing before. Mind you I'm 40 yrs old and a triple war vet. So I'm no baby...But that dang dog made me cry like a baby when she left.

So insted of just getting a puppy wiem I wanted to give another lost and lonley wiem a good and loving home. Enter Ashley, A city girl from NJ and some supposed bad habits. There is a report she actually bit someone once. I have yet to see the slightest bit of agression in her. But no I'm not new to dogs, so we'll see I guess. She's 4 and still a teenager it seems....She being a city girl, Has been, for the last week having the adventure of her life. She is discovering a whole new world. And what it means to be smothered in human love. Let alone what it means to be free and run for as far as she can, roll in the most hidius smelling stuff, what a running stream is, what cows are, what the woods even are. She has gone to sleep every night in my bed and snored the whole night away.

And in the end so far...this dog has brought joy and happiness to this mans heart. I cant for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to get rid of this little girl I now have the honor of taking care of for the rest of her life.

Thanks folks And Julie at tristate wiem rescue, And I hope this touched some of you as much as this breed and these two dogs have touched me.

cheers, Pat Toupin. Beaver Dams N.Y.

Indian,

Your post brought tears to my eyes - with so many Weims either in bad homes or in rescue shelters, it's uplifting to hear from people who understand what it is to "smother with human love" simply for the sheer joy it brings to us to do it. Congratulations to you on finding another cuddle-bum to share your heart with!

My husband and I cannot even fathom what it would be like to lose our Weim, but be both know that when the time comes, it will wreck us, regardless of how strong we are. These dogs touch our hearts in ways that nobody and nothing else seems to be able to, yes?

Our Weim wasn't in a good home either, and he, too, was accused of atrocious behaviors. Bowie has been with us for 2-1/2 years now, and we've yet to see anything other than normal Weim behavior from him!

Thank you for your story - as I said in my introduction, it's fantastic to hear from others who are as ga-ga over their Weims as we are over ours!

Krio

Pat, sounds like a match made in heaven. It must be truly wonderful to see her so giddy with excitement at her newfound freedom. I'm not sure where Beaver Dams, NY is, but I grew up an hour north of albany. Its a great place to own a weim!!!! Now we live in MA, but Scout sure loves to go to my childhood home and visit my family!

Wow, Pat, I have been through a similar situation.

I rescued Oliver in 2005 from his people who had had him from a pup, but were kenneling him at the vet 5 days a week. He was 7 years old and they didn't want him anymore! So he came to live with me and was wonder dog!. Sadly we only had 18 months together when he succumbed to bone cancer. I was devastated.

I thought that I would never get another dog because it is so painful when they go. But I was volunteering with a weim rescue group. The director called me and said that a sweet 4year old boy named Beau had been dumped at the county shelter. She went and sprang him and brought him to the next adoption event. Long story short, after an overnight trial sleepover, he came to live with me last Labor Day weekend. He is the sweetest, most loving, well behaved dog I have ever know. People are just amazed by how human like he is. He's my constant companion and he, too lives the good life. He has a sitter that comes once a day while I am at work for a walk and some play. He has the choice of 3 beds and two couches for his morning and afternoon naps. Sleeps with me at night, of course, with his own comforter which he sort of rolls up into a little nest. He eats organic food and rides in the front seat with a seatbelt on. I pray every that he lives to be 20!

Yep, people laugh at me, but I don't care!

You can see his pics on our gallery.

Indian, what a touching story. I have 3 wiems, 2 that I have had since they were 7 and 8 weeks old and 1 male that we got from my sister. He was in a bad situation, but, you would NEVER know it now. When we found our girls we had been looking for a breeder for about 9 years. My husband had 2 girls a long time ago, Coco and Dora. Coco, was shot, yes, shot, my husband had some really nasty neighbors, and Dora passed away with cancer. I never knew Coco, but I knew Dora and she was awesome. He had her when we met and I had 2 children. She took right to my daughter and they were inseparable. Like Dora had raised my daughter herself. It was so neat to sit and watch the 2 together. My daughter was only 3 at the time and small. I was so scared for that big dog to be around my little girl. Dora showed me how gentle she could be with my baby and it was love from then on. When we had to tell my daughter, she was then 7 that Dora had passed away, it was a really sad day around here. I don't know who was more upset, well yes, I do, My little girl had lost her best friend and so had my husband. My daughter now has a female weimie named Lily and she is Tess and Dushess' sister.
Anyway, You have really brought back some fond memories for me that I have not thought about in years.

Thank goodness you have another baby to show love to and she will surely show it back.
God Bless
